The fall of Constantinople
Ottoman forces under Mehmed II capture the Byzantine capital.
After a siege of nearly two months, Ottoman troops breached the walls of Constantinople. The last Byzantine emperor, Constantine XI, died in the fighting.
The city became the Ottoman capital, and the conquest is often used to mark the end of the Middle Ages.
