The bombing of Hiroshima
The United States drops the first atomic bomb used in war on the Japanese city of Hiroshima.
The bomb killed tens of thousands instantly; by the end of 1945 the death toll had risen to around 140,000.
A second bomb fell on Nagasaki three days later, and Japan announced its surrender on August 15.
