Notre-Dame burns

Fire tears through Paris’s great cathedral, toppling the spire and destroying the medieval roof.

On the evening of April 15, 2019, fire broke out beneath the roof of Notre-Dame de Paris and destroyed the medieval timber structure, the 19th-century spire crashing down in flames as Parisians sang hymns in the streets below.

The Gothic stone skeleton survived, and after a five-year restoration the cathedral reopened for worship in December 2024.
